 Getting Started

Choose one of the programs below to get started!

There are countless ways to get started and raise funds... you are limited only by your imagination. Here are a few ideas that have worked for other students. Upon completion of a student's Service Learning Hours, we encourage the student to download and complete our reflections page. We believe that reflection is the key to learning from any experience in life. Taking the time to think about what one has been through helps the individual to assess (or re-assess) his/her values and life goals. Through reflection, the Service Learning experience becomes an integral part of the students life. Like a seed that is planted today and will blossom over time, the community service that is completed today directly and profoundly touches and impacts the life of another (a child in need) over time. Reflecting on that experience helps to ensure the participating student is aware of how his/her choices influence others in life.

You can ask for donations from friends, family, co-workers or teachers to build up your "inventory" and maximize your earning potential. Including a bake sale or other concessions (hot dogs and soda) is a great way to keep people browsing and raise additional funds at the same time. For every $10 collected, you will receive 1 Service Learning Hour.

Bake Sale- This has been a tried-and-true fund raiser although there are some initial costs associated with making the delicious desserts. However, you can ask for "baked donations" from friends and family. For every $10 collected, you will receive 1 Service Learning Hour.

  • Step 1: Secure a high visibility such as place of business, church or school by asking for permission from the owner or manager to hold the Bake Sale and provide a date and time to them. You could also hold the Bake Sale in front of your house as well. Just be sure to make plenty of fliers to pass out to everyone you know (and don't know) in your area.
  • Step 2: Ask your "baker" friends, family, neighbors or classmates if they can help donate an item or two. Items may include anything tasty! Ask if they can bake items a day or two before the day of the Bake Sale so they can stay the freshest.
  • Step 3: Make up a sign for each item indicating the price of the baked good.
  • Step 4: Hold the Bake Sale.
  • Step 5: Whether you raise enough money from one Bake Sale or ten, upon completion for your Service Learning Hours, send the proceeds either by Check, Money Order or PayPal. Upon receiving your funds, we will give you instructions via email on how to obtain your Completion Letter.
